SDG Action & Awareness Week

On February 28 – March 4, 2022, University Global Coalition (UC Davis is a member), will host the 2nd annual SDG Action & Awareness Week. This year’s plan includes a shared calendar of Sustainable Development Goal-focused events hosted by partners around the world, resources for learning about and taking action on advancing the global goals, and resources to help host SDG-focused events or weeks in your own communities/on your own campus. The full calendar of events can be accessed here.

If you are planning to host an event that week, or interested in hosting one, the guidelines and submission form can be found here. The date/time of event and event focus are very flexible during the week to allow for creativity and participation from around the world. The primary asks are that the event is virtual, free, and encourages action on the global goals. Events will be shared through the UGC events calendar and social media.

Please feel free to contact Jolynn Shoemaker (jmshoemaker@ucdavis.edu) or Tom Rosen-Molina (jtrosenmolina@ucdavis.edu) if you are interested in sharing or planning a SDG Action & Awareness Week event at UC Davis.

Free Screening of ‘Coming Clean: A Demand for a Fossil Free UC

Coming Clean is a film directed by Carolina Montejo and Andre Salehian, members of the grassroots movement UCSD Green New Deal. The film explores the issues with the UC's Carbon Neutrality Plan and the need to step into the needs and demands of the 21st Century by keeping fossil fuels in the ground. Through various interviews with expert UC professors, students, labor unions representatives, and environmental justice advocates, the film addresses why the trending market of carbon offsets is allowing corporations and institutions to avoid taking genuine responsibility in the face of climate change. By including perspectives from diverse movements, Coming Clean shows the overlap of the environmental movement with that of social justice, labor, and climate action, as well as the importance of local mobilization and people demanding change where they have a voice.

UC Davis “Farming Around the World” project showcased by Universitas 21

RISE (Real Impact on Society and Environment) is an international showcase by the Universitas 21 network (U21) of student achievement in sustainability and social innovation designed to accelerate the scale and impact of student-led projects by connecting them with a network of experts in academia and industry.  All finalists in the showcase undertake a development course delivered by U21 and Common Purpose, experts in cross-boundary leadership and have the opportunity to receive pledges of support from across the U21 network.

A project submitted by UC Davis students is among the showcased projects in the competition. It is called “Farming Around the World” and the project was started in 2020 by two female graduate students at UC Davis who shared a common passion for sustainable farming, global learning, and building connections across countries. Their efforts crystallized in the First Global Student Farm Symposium where participants from 11 countries on five continents came together virtually in 2021 to work on UN Sustainable Development Goals. After the spectacular success achieved with this event, it became an annual event, with UC Davis hosting the 2022 Symposium. In 2023, Universidad de Talca, Chile will host the Symposium, followed by other partner universities.

Watch the video

You can pledge your support for a U21 RISE project by offering to act as a mentor or sharing advice, by connecting RISE students with people in your network who could help them take the next step, or by sharing the RISE showcase with your networks on social media and other channels to increase the visibility of the projects.
