IIE and UC Davis created the Future of International Education: Leadership Perspectives from Around the World as an online series for candid discussion among senior university leaders, to facilitate region-specific and global insights about how the pandemic is reshaping global engagement for higher education. Based on the series, this briefing paper covers four key themes for the future of international education.
In July 2020, the University of California, Davis, and UNSW Sydney signed a new partnership in food and nutrition science and engineering. The relationship will focus on student exchange, research collaboration and the pursuit of joint funding opportunities, with an emphasis on food systems.

UC Davis Global Affairs and the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion are partnering with the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) to pilot the Asia-Pacific Women in Leadership (APWiL) Mentoring Program. This program pairs faculty from 11 participating institutions on a year-long program focusing on empowerment, professional growth and development in order to grow the pipeline of aspiring women leaders within APRU.
Earlier this summer Global Affairs held a virtual grantee “coffee hour” to generate questions from and answers for grantees about engaging with their global partners during the pandemic. As part of the event, Global Affairs staff asked faculty recipients of Global Affairs grants (Seed Grants for International Activities, Grants for Advancing Sustainable Development Goals, and Grants for Regional Faculty Groups) about creative ways they have found to carry out global partnership and grant-related activities when it isn’t possible to meet in person.
The University of California DAVIS (UC Davis) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia are excited to enter into a partnership on Food and Nutrition Science. The program is built around the strategic axes of student exchange, research collaboration and exploration of joint funding opportunities.
UC Davis is the lead institution on a global classroom pilot project, partnering with Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico and Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China to create a framework for teaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using a global classroom model that has been developed and utilized by Tecnológico de Monterrey and will be enhanced by UC Davis and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
UC Davis recently released an updated version of Article 26 Backpack, a digital tool and ecosystem for refugees and other displaced peoples to safely and securely curate, store, and share critical academic and career development documents with universities, possible employers, and agencies.
UC Davis was announced a winner of the Global Education Enhancement Fund offering $5,000 per institution to support members in delivering and enhancing higher education for a rapidly changing and uncertain future.
