For Parents and Families

Residence hall move-in

Dear Parents and Family,

In Summer Start, parents and families of international freshmen can rest assured knowing their student is well taken care of.

There is a lot to do after admission and before arrival, and students receive support from the moment their Summer Start application is received. We help navigate the complicated U.S. visa process and guide students through their first course registration.

Summer Start offers optional pickup at San Francisco International Airport to ensure safe and convenient passage to campus. Upon arrival in Davis students go shopping for room essentials to have a comfortable first night’s rest. The first weekend is full of interactive activities designed to recover from jet lag, learn the campus, and meet students and staff so they are prepared for their first classes on Monday.

Over six weeks, students balance courses with programming that builds relationships and other skills essential for university success like time management and intercultural communication. When fall begins, Summer Start students are already closer to completing their degrees. In addition, they have the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed at UC Davis.

In 2018, an impressive 97% of participants recommended Summer Start to future international freshmen.  As you consider all the many things to do to prepare your son or daughter for their years at university, I urge you to consider Summer Start.

All the best,

Dawn Takaoglu
