"Upon invitation from the Director of the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Center (CSER) at Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG), Dr. Mauricio Alcocer Ruthling, the Director of Mexico’s National Commission of Efficient Energy Use (CONUEE) visited the installations of what will be the new Lighting Technology Center (CTI).

During the visit on July 11, the terms of the collaboration were established, which included discussion on the topic of efficient energy use.

In particular, after being announced by the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) and the Federal Department of Energy, and created through an agreement with the University of California (UC), the Lighting Technology Center (CTI) is where research, prototypes and the development of new lighting technology will be done.

Specifically, this project is in collaboration with UC Davis, which already has its own lighting technology center and energy efficient experts. They have supported the center’s installation design and will be present during the first few months of operation.

In conversation with Dr. Alcocer, the CSER and CTI teams, along with senior administration officials from UAG, identified four possible area of collaboration:

(1) Professional tutorials on CONUEE topics

(2) Collaboration in the development of efficient energy standards

(3) UAG participation in teams dedicated to the normalization of energy-efficient lighting

(4) Joint research publications

(5) CSER participation in CONUEE programs that have regional presence in western part of the country

It’s worth noting that the UC-Mexico initiative was started in 2014 by UC President, Janet Napolitano, along with $10 million in new funding that has helped support research projects on efficient energy use, which have been developed by Mexican institutions in collaboration with researchers from UC. In terms of the CTI, this project is one of the most valued initiatives that is foreseen to be completed with the support and participation of the CONUEE."
